You can visit an STI clinic for diagnosis and treatment of any
symptoms you might have, or for a check up even if you aren't
experiencing any symptoms. Reasons you may visit a clinic include:
- you have symptoms suspicious of a STI, for example, burning
on urination or discharge from the urethra for males, vaginal
discharge, itch or odor for women. Either sex may notice a rash,
sores or bumps around their genital or anal areas
- your sexual partner has been diagnosed with a STI; or they
have symptoms that may indicate a STI
- you feel you are at risk for an infection through sexual contact or injection drug use
- you are beginning a new relationship and want to have a check up to be sure that you and your new partner are both healthy.
Even if you feel you are not at risk for a STI, it is important
to remember that most of these infections can happen without any
symptoms. This means you may not notice any changes with your
body, but may still have an infection and can pass it on to sexual
partner(s). The only way to be certain is to be tested.
